Unseeded at Madrid, she made it all the way to the final, defeating Anastasija Sevastova, Caroline Wozniacki and Caroline Garcia before losing to Petra Kvitova in the final. Kiki gained 54 ELO rating points from this tournament, which moves her up 12 places in my rankings to #23.
This week's
Upset player of the week is Venus Williams. She was the 8th seed, but she lost her 1st round match to Anett Kontaveit, This loss meant that Venus lost 15 ELO rating points, and she falls 3 places in my rankings to #10.
Other strong performers relative to their rankings are Kristyna Pliskova, Kristina Mladenovic and Bernada Pera.
