Women's ELO Rankings 19/01/2015

With the tournament finishing on Saturday this week to allow players to prepare for the Australian Open, I can post my rankings a day early. This also means that there will be no rankings posted next week, as the Australian Open will still be in progress. I have an idea for things to fill this blog with over the next 2 weeks until then.

Now, for the Big Gainer of the Week. Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova and Madison Brengle have all done well this week, climbing 3, 23 and 27 places to new rankings of #4, #16 and #30 respectively, but they were all outshone by the winner of the Hobart tournament. Britain's Heather Watson! (I try to avoid bias towards my home country but I have no choice here), with great wins against high ranked players, she has climbed a massive 104 places from last week to #28, moving from a below average ELO to an above average ELO. She's a deserving winner of the Big Gainer of the week award, and I hope to see her do even better at the Australian Open.

On the other side, our Upset player of the Week goes to Lucie Safarova, who lost her 1st round match to Samantha Stosur in a very strong tournament. She only lost 1 place in the rankings to #9, as most of the players around her either didn't play or also lost early at Sydney.

Other strong performers relative to their rankings this week were Tsvetana Pironkova, Camila Giorgi, Karin Knapp and Jarmila Gajdosova.
