U.S. Open Women's Singles Summary + ELO Rankings 14/09/2015

With the U.S. Open finished, now's the best time to have a look back at how my predictions did. These predictions were solely based on an ELO rating system that I have been updating from the start of the year.

R1: 41/63 (65%)
R2: 24/32 (75%)
R3: 7/16 (44%)
R4: 5/8 (63%)
R5: 2/4 (50%)
R6: 0/2 (0%)
R7: 1/1 (100%)

Overall: 80/126 (63.5%)

Not a great performance, but not a disaster either, especially when you consider that the later rounds were very unpredictable thanks to the big gainer of the week (see below) and her compatriot in the final.

The Big Gainer of the (2) week(s) is the tournament winner, Flavia Pennetta. She came in to the tournament rated #32 in my rankings, but won the tournament with wins against Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep on her way to the title, these wins gave Flavia 70 ELO rating points, and a new ranking of #11. Congratulations, and enjoy your retirement at the end of the season.

The Upset player of the (2) week(s) award goes to Sloane Stephens. Her loss in the 1st round to CoCo Vandeweghe was very unexpected after a strong season up until now, costing her 14 ELO rating points, which puts her at a new ranking of #9.

Other strong performers relative to their rankings are Roberta Vinci, Eugenie Bouchard, Johanna Konta, Varvara Lepchenko and Anett Kontaveit.

Now, the full rankings. NOTE: This week, I am using a new set of rankings, with a minimum number of matches or tournaments needed to be ranked. The ratings are the same ones but fewer players will be ranked in these posts. One notable omission is Maria Sharapova, who has only played 1 tournament with 6 matches in it since I started collecting this data.
