2016 AO Women's Summary + ELO Rankings 01/02/2016

With the Australian Open finishing today, now's the best time to have a look back at how my predictions did. These predictions were solely based on an ELO rating system I have been using for just over a year now.

Worse than last year, this year saw a lot of upsets that nobody could have predicted, especially those caused by my Big Gainer of the week (see below) and the woman who ended up beating her. Let's hope for better at the French Open.

My Big Gainer of the (2) week(s) award is awarded to Zhang Shuai. Coming in to the Australian Open, she was the lowest ranked player on my rankings, and was drawn against the 2nd seed in the 1st round, yet she won, and defeated Madsion Keys in the 4th round before losing in the quarter finals. Shuai gained 50 ELO rating points for the series of upsets, and climbs 28 places in my rankings to #100. 

The Upset player of the (2) week(s) goes to Simona Halep. She was the 2nd seed in Melbourne, and was expected to beat the woman who ended up as the Big Gainer of the week, but she lost her 1st match. Simona's early loss cost her 17 ELO rating points, but she stays as the ELO #6 on my rankings.

Other strong performers relative to their rankings are Johanna Konta, Margarita Gasparyan, Barbora Strycova, Annika Beck and Kateryna Bondarenko.
