2016 Tennis ELO Awards - Voting

Starting from this year, I'm going to be awarding some virtual prizes to 4 players based on my Big Gainer and Upset player awards that are handed out every week. Below the jump are the players I've shortlisted for the 4 awards this year and where you can vote for the winner.

For the "Player of the Year" awards, I've listed why each player has been nominated, which I haven't done for the "Disappointment of the year" awards. How you choose who you vote for is up to you, the winners of the awards will be the player who gets the most votes.

The deadline for voting will be 04/12/2016 23;59:59 UTC. (Edit: Polls have now closed, winners are announced here)

2016 US Open Final update

The semi finals finished on time, so it's time for a quick update to my ELO ratings for the finals of the US Open.

But before the rankings, some stats I calculated for the top 150 players:

Men's Rank± ELO
1-1063
11-20-25
21-5013
51-10037
101-150-10

Women's Rank± ELO
1-1069
11-20-5
21-5023
51-1003
101-150-34

All 4 finalists are in the top 10, so these are the final numbers, with the last change being a 5 point gain for the top 10 women from the 21-50 group. Now all that's left is to see which top 10 player will win the title.

2016 US Open Semi Final update

The quarter finals finished on time, so it's time for a quick update to my ELO ratings for the semi finals of the US Open.

But before the rankings, some stats I calculated for the top 150 players:

Men's Rank± ELO
1-1063
11-20-25
21-5013
51-10037
101-150-10

Women's Rank± ELO
1-1064
11-20-5
21-5028
51-1003
101-150-34

The 4 men who remain in the tournament are all in the top 10 above, so this is the final version of those stats. The only changes are that the top 10 gained ELO mainly at the expense of the 21-50 group. The top 10 women make up 3 out of the 4 semi finalists, and they gained points from the last round at the expense of the 21-50 and 51-100 groups.

2016 US Open Quarter Final update

Round 4 has finished on time, so it's time for a quick update to my ELO ratings for the quarter finals of the US Open.

But before the rankings, some stats I calculated for the top 150 players:

Men's Rank± ELO
1-1047
11-20-22
21-5026
51-10037
101-150-10

Women's Rank± ELO
1-1053
11-20-5
21-5033
51-1009
101-150-34

The big change for the men this round is that the 21-50 ranked players have improved at the expense of the top 10 players. For the Women, the 11-20 ranked players suffered in the last round, with the 21-50 ranked players benefiting.

Sunday, 4 September 2016

2016 US Open Round 4 update

Round 3 has finished on time, so it's time for a quick update to my ELO ratings for round 4 of the US Open.

But before the rankings, some stats I calculated for the top 150 players:

Men's Rank± ELO
1-1057
11-20-25
21-5015
51-10038
101-150-7

Women's Rank± ELO
1-1056
11-2032
21-50-2
51-1004
101-150-34

The big change for the Women is the dominance of the top 20 players, at the expense of the 21-50 and the 101-150 players. For the Men, it's the 11-20 ranked players who have suffered, with the top 10 and the 21-50 ranked players benefiting.

2016 US Open Round 3 update

Round 2 has finished on time, so it's time for a quick update to my ELO ratings for round 3 of the US Open.

But before the rankings, some stats I calculated for the top 150 players:

Men's Rank± ELO
1-1031
11-2028
21-50-14
51-10049
101-150-16

Women's Rank± ELO
1-1040
11-207
21-5021
51-1002
101-150-18

The 11-20 ranked men have done much better this round than the previous round, taking most of those points from players ranked 21-50, such as David Ferrer's win over Fabio Fognini, and those outside of the top 150.

The big change for the women this time is an improvement in the 21-50 group, at the expense of the 51-100 group, such as Johanna Larsson's win over Denisa Allertova and the 101-150 group, such as Timea Babos' win over Richel Hogenkamp.

2016 Wimbledon Semi Finals update

It's time for the Semi Finals update, we're down to the last 4 now.

Men's

#NameELO
1Andy Murray1920
2Roger Federer1856
3Milos Raonic1802
4Tomas Berdych1761

Murray and Federer are guaranteed #2 and #3 respectively whatever happens, as they were before the tournament started. Raonic has already overtaken Thiem but needs to beat Federer to overtake Nishikori. Berdych needs to beat Murray to overtake Wawrinka.

Women's

#NameELO
1Serena Williams1867
2Angelique Kerber1739
3Venus Williams1689
4Elena Vesnina1628
Serena is guaranteed the #1 spot. Kerber will overtake Radwanska if she defeats Venus, and be in a position to claim the #2 spot from Azarenka. A Venus win over Kerber will move her ahead of Bacsinszky, while a Vesnina win over Serena would see her overtake Makarova, after already overtaking everyone else ranked between her and Kvitova on my last weekly ELO rankings.
